When to use Medicare Mental Health Check In
If you're thinking about using Medicare Mental Health Check In, a good first step is to think about your current situation and what kind of mental health support you're looking for.
How Medicare Mental Health Check In works
Medicare Mental Health Check In offers early support for people beginning to experience mental health challenges such as ongoing stress, low mood, worry, or difficulties coping with everyday pressures.
The service offers free online programs to help you manage mild mental health challenges. These programs use a safe, evidence-based approach called Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT) that has shown to be effective in helping manage symptoms and regain a sense of control.
Unlike therapy or intensive CBT, this service is structured around evidence-based resources and tools. Practitioners are there to guide you through these resources, if you want additional support.
There are currently 6 programs that you can work through with a trained practitioner. Each program focuses on practical ways to cope with common challenges and takes around 6 weeks to complete. From late May 2026, self-guided options will also be available, allowing you to work independently at your own pace.
These programs help build coping skills and self-awareness. Progress comes from trying out different activities and strategies between sessions.
